How do I connect with Corey?

Where did the idea for "Scruffy the Elf" come from?

Corey thought it would be funny to cross elf-story genres by sending a character from Middle Earth to work at the North Pole.  As Corey was writing the song he came across a disturbing question:  How does Santa cover his operating budget?  Sweat-shop labor seemed to be the obvious answer.

During a visit to his family Corey stayed at his sisters house.  The room he was staying in was plastered with posters of Orlando Bloom.  This freaked him out.  Orlando Bloom is too man-pretty for his own good.  Somehow this made him think about the idea of an elf that wasn't pretty-an elf with facial hair.

Finally, he thought about what an North Pole elf would do if he went bad.  Smoking candy canes and doing a drive by with snowballs seemed to be a palatable answer.  This random blend of thoughts led to the story of Scruffy the Elf.

How did Corey shoot the Scruffy the Elf music video?

Corey and his friends made a blue screen with bargain bin fabric and filmed the video in Geoff Holman's living room.  Jeff Myers filmed and edited it and Geoff Holman did all of the background work.  The total budget was about $300 for costumes and burritos.

Will Corey be the Godfather of my child?

Probably not.  However, he does make exceptions if:

-You pay $30,000 USD

-You do not have a terminal disease

-You are willing to let him "loan" your child out to work on farms for a profit

What's the story, Corey?

Corey-in his own words:

I grew up in a small beach town called Bandon, Oregon.  My dad was a logger, the rest of my family are carpenters and cranberry farmers.  I started playing guitar when I was 14 to impress girls.  It didn't work.

My first band was a grunge rock trio called Chief Lewis.  The band was named after the Chief of Police who lived two houses down and kept shutting down our practices.  We wrote such notable songs as "The Mr. Potato-Head Song" and a bunch of songs with cryptic one-word titles such as "Can't" "Try", and "Comprehend".

I spent a lot of time on the beach playing cover tunes around campfires for my friends.  This experience was really formative to my creative journey-it's where I grew to love the community that could be built through music.

When I was 19 I moved to Saskatchewan (a very cold place-it’s not like the beach) and went to a school called Briercrest.  I became a bit of a legend out there because I got dropped off at 5 am in -40 degree weather. Nothing was open so I took shelter in a phone booth.  I had only seen snow 3 times, and this experience made me seriously question my decision to move to Canada.  Somehow this story spread throughout the town (I think the guy who heard the story told 2 people-the population of Caronport is about 1,200).

After an acoustic performance in a basement café I was approached by a small label called Slyngshot Records who helped myself and a few other artists record their first albums.  That’s when I first started touring around Western Canada and the US.

After I finished my degree I moved to Kelowna, BC, got married and worked at Willow Park Church (my home church) as a worship leader for a few years.  Then I decided that I wanted to hit the road and dedicate my life to songwriting and performing full time-live the gypsy life and whatnot.  That story is now in progress.

Does Corey have a criminal record?

No, but if he did he would like to have the following crimes attributed to him:

Assault with a Slap Chop

Inciting School Children to Boycott Milk Products

Who are some of Corey's favorite artists?

In Corey's words:

Anything that communicates authenticity, truth, humor and beauty-from the Beatles to Picasso, from Bruce Cockburn to Jerry Seinfeld, Flannery O'Conner to Leo Tolstoy.  One of my main things I look for is if the work has different shades and nuances when I come back to it.  I love most the works that continually reveal something new.  Also, I like works that say things in a fresh way.
